REVIEW: Mamma Mia Musical

Mamma Mia Musical

Just when you thought ABBA’s classics couldn’t get any more legendary, a musical comes to town with all of their best hits! Built on the foundation of ABBA’s timeless and fantastic tracks, Mamma Mia arrived in Sydney carrying high expectations and an even higher level of excitement. I was fortunate enough to be in the audience of a show at Capitol Theatre and from the moment the lights dimmed and the performance began, I knew I would not be disappointed.

Mamma Mia Musical

Unlike any musical I have seen before, the show carried a unique level of energy and a buzz that simply can’t be described! The cast delivered the iconic story with flair and humour using their undeniable talent and passion. Throughout the performance, I was fully engaged and entertained. What made it even more special was the maintaining of Aussie accents and some little Sydney anecdotes that connected the audience and cast on a deeper level.

From the costumes to the lighting, every visual aspect of the show was a masterpiece to look at. I was constantly gazing at the gorgeous Greek island set and every aspect of the choreography and designing was well thought out and aesthetically flawless. Despite the familiarity to the classic story of soon to be married Sophie inviting her three potential fathers to her wedding, forcing her mother Donna to reminisce of old loves – every member of the audience was completely enticed as the show projected a unique flair with its choreography, cast and script.

There was not a silent member of the crowd, especially when the show came to an end and the cast announced that we had just witnessed their 100th performance! It was truly a moment I will never forget as everyone in Capitol Theatre lit up their phones for a ‘super trouper snapshot’ and got to their feet dancing to Mamma Mia!. The undeniable energy and passion from the cast made it impossible not to sing along!

I cannot express enough how blown away I was by the cast’s energy and genuine love for performing. Although there was an overload of songs, I still left the show feeling uplifted and full of energy!
