Ian Somerhalder

Ian SomerhalderThe Vampire Diaries is nearing its final episode!

Fans gathered around Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon Salvatore in the show, at Walker Stalker Con in Nashville on Sunday, where he told the crowd Season Eight would be the end of the popular TV series.

According to the event’s Twitter account, the 37-year-old said, “We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice.”

He told the crowd his role had changed in the program and there was a lot to cover before the series concludes.

However, a spokesman for The CW, the network behind the drama, contradicted Somerhalder’s comments and told EW no decisions had been made regarding the shows future.

The seventh series is set to reach its end in the United States next month and the following series is expected to premiere later this year.

Somerhalder’s remarks came not long after his colleague Kat Graham, who plays Bonnie Bennett, announced she would be ending her role at the end of Season Eight.

Season Seven of The Vampire Diaries is currently playing on Foxtel across Australia.
