Moonlight Wins Best Picture After Mix-Up At Oscars

Oscars 2017

This year’s Academy Awards were held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, and there was some chaos!

The celebrated musical film La La Land was mistakenly named the winner of the most coveted award of the Oscars, Best Picture, instead of Moonlight.

The cast and crew of the film, which had been widely tipped to win, were on stage accepting the award when they were interrupted by presenter Warren Beatty who said, “I’m sorry, there’s a mistake.”

Shock filled the theatre as it became apparent that Beatty, who had looked confused as he fumbled with the card, had read the wrong name.

“I opened the envelope and it said ‘Emma Stone, La La Land.’ I wasn’t trying to be funny,” he said.

Host Jimmy Kimmel informed the cast that there had indeed been a mistake and showed the envelope as proof.

Producer Jordan Horwitz repeatedly said “this is not a joke” before graciously passing his statue to the Moonlight producers, saying they deserved to win.

“I don’t know what happened. I blame myself for this. Let’s remember it’s just an awards show,” Kimmel said.

“I mean, we hate to see people disappointed but the good news is we got to see some extra speeches.”

Before the blunder, the ceremony was full of jabs at US President Donald Trump and passionate arguments for inclusivity.

La La Land’s director, 32-year-old Damien Chazelle became the youngest director to win an Oscar.

Awards were spread around to Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea and Hacksaw Ridge, among others.
