Nicolas Cage Addresses A Potential National Treasure Three

Will There Be A National Treasure 3?

Nicolas Cage has all but officially confirmed that the popular National Treasure film series and its potential third film has languished in development hell.

The first two films were critical duds due to their unfathomable premise, however, were praised for their action sequences and acting performances.

Cage is currently riding a high following the rave reviews of his latest film The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent, which sees Cage play a fictional version of himself. The film currently has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

In a recent press interview to promote the film, the Oscar-winner opened up about the possibility of a third National Treasure film. The topic came up when Cage was asked about the similar uncertainty about Face/Off 2.

“So often these things we read about are just conjecture without any base or foundation to it. I feel the same about National Treasure 3. It’s been 14 years. There’s no there, there. So, is it fun to think about? Sure,” said Cage.

It is reported that several scripts have been submitted to the production company responsible for the two films in the franchise Walt Disney Pictures, however they have all been rejected.

The two films made over $800 million at the box office, with a combined budget of $230 million.

Despite a third film seemingly less and less likely, the franchise isn’t entirely dead as a TV series is currently in the works for Disney+ centred on a young Latina protagonist. Whether the show is connected to the films is still unknown.
