Mortal Kombat 2 is Happening

Mortal Kombat 2 is officially in the works as Jeremy Slater gets brought on board to write an incredible script.

Mortal Kombat was originally an extremely popular video game franchise and was given multiple chances to have a live-action movie franchise created in 2021.

The original film from the 90s ended after just two movies, with the reboot coming in 2021, which ended up saving it.

The 2021 reboot focused on OG character Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan, watching him train alongside other characters such as Sonya Blade and Jax, in order to prepare to save the world.

It was released simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters. It’s box office wasn’t thriving but it did become the most-streamed movie on HBO Max and WB’s same-day release slate.

This allowed the conversation of a Mortal Kombat 2 to begin buzzing. The ending of the reboot showed exactly what would happen in Mortal Kombat 2, if continued.

Months and months went by and no word, but according to a new report, it’s official. Mortal Kombat 2 is a thing! New Line and Warner Bros. have taken steps in the direction of continuing the franchise. First step, hiring Jeremy Slater.

Jeremy is known for his work on Moon Knight and The Umbrella Academy. No other hires have taken place, which means director Simon McQuoid and certain cast members still need to make a decision. As of now, there is also no release date set.

Based on the ending of the reboot, the story will see Cole Young among others recruiting new Champions of Earth. One in particular is Johnny Cage.

The fighting tournaments that were included in the first film were not what was expected. It has been said that Mortal Kombat shall bring those expectations to life, as Shang Tsung brings a new army, hoping to claim Earth.

With this, we should also see the return of Sub-Zero as Noot Saboit. Jeremy has been placed in charge of bringing the stories together, as he has now taken over from Dave Callaham, Greg Russo and Oren Uziel.

With the sequel now in the works, we should hope to see a release for 2023 or 2024. Many details still have to be released, such as how the sequel will be released.

Due to the high profile reboot created on HBO Max, we could be looking at an exclusive release on HBO Max. Here’s hoping Jeremy brings in a better reception than the first did.

What do you think of this? Would you watch the sequel? Did you watch the original? Let us know in the comments below.
