Kristen Bell Opens Up About Her Battle With Depression

Kristen Bell

Kristen BellKristen Bell has opened up in an article about her challenge with depression.

The actress, who’s claim to fame was playing private investigator Veronica Mars, had such a happy and bubbly life but out of nowhere, a grey cloud shadowed her light.

She was studying at New York University at the time. She was able to pay her bills on time and she had friends with ambitions but something took the spring from her step.

Her mother had always told her “if there ever comes a time where you feel like a dark cloud is following you, you can get help.”

Thanks to her mum’s sage advice, Bell knew she didn’t have to be ashamed of her gloomy outlook on life.

“When you try to keep things hidden, they fester and ultimately end up revealing themselves in a far more destructive way than if you approach them with honesty,” Bell wrote.

“I didn’t speak publicly about my struggles with mental health for the first 15 years of my career.

“But now I’m at a point where I don’t believe anything should be taboo.”

For Bell, depression came as a sense of isolation and loneliness. She felt she had nothing to offer the world and was a failure. However, she followed her mum’s advice and found someone to speak to who put her on track and made her realise those thoughts were wrong.

Bell wants to start a conversation, which is why she has shared her experience.

“There is such an extreme stigma about mental health issues, and I can’t make heads or tails of why it exists.”

She goes on to outline anyone can fall to depression, no matter how successful or stable their lives may seem.

“Mental health check-ins should be as routine as going to the doctor or the dentist,” she said.

If you have a health problem, the first reaction is to see a doctor. Getting checked out for depression should be no different.

“There’s nothing weak about struggling with mental illness.

“You’re just having a harder time living in your brain than other people.”

Bell’s doctor listens to her when she needs someone to talk to and she doesn’t want people to suffer alone. There are a lot of ways to deal with depression, but the first step is talking about it.

“We’re all on team human here, and let’s be honest – it’s not an easy team to be on.

“It’s stressful and taxing and worrisome, but it’s also fulfilling and beautiful and bright.

“In order for all of us to experience the full breadth of team human, we have to communicate.”

Depression is a problem many people will go through and it has many remedies. If you think you are struggling with depression, find someone you trust to talk to. A teacher, counsellor, friend, anyone. Don’t sit there and brew. It only makes things worst.

We’ve all been in Kristen Bell’s shoes. Let’s learn from it and push through the cloudy skies.
