The Man Behind R2D2 Dies Aged 81

Kenny Baker

Kenny BakerKenny Baker, the man who brought R2-D2 to life in the original Star Wars films has unfortunately passed away at the age of 81.

Baker made the original robot seem human with his charming personality and wit, all with simple beeps and squeaks, starting with 1977’s A New Hope.

At 3 feet, 8 inches tall, Baker controlled Artoo from inside the droid and created the much loved character.

“Kenny was truly the heart and soul of R2-D2,” said George Lucas.

Baker was born in Birmingham, England and began acting at the age of 16. Alongside Star Wars, he was also famous for The Elephant Man, Time Bandits and Willow.
