Harvey Weinstein Charged Over Sexual Assault Allegations

Harvey Weinstein

Disgraced movie producer, Harvey Weinstein has been prosecuted with rape and several counts of sexual abuse after turning himself in to authorities in New York.

Police escorted Weinstein into the station house at 9:25pm AEST (7:25am local time). Scores of journalists pushed up against barricades for pictures while police helicopters flew overhead.

A $US 1 million cash bail was granted for the producer as well as the wearing of an electronic monitor, surrendered passport and no travel beyond New York and Connecticut, which Weinstein agreed to. His lawyer indicated that Weinstein would plead not guilty as he denied any allegations of misconduct.

The New York police department released a statement saying “Mr Weinstein was arrested, processed and charged with rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct for incidents involving two separate women.”

More than 70 women have come forward with allegations of rape and sexual misconduct with some accusations dating back decades. The accusations paved the way for the #MeToo movement, in which hundreds of women have publicly accused men in government, business and entertainment of misconduct and assault.
