Denzel Washington To Return To The Equalizer

Denzel Washington in The Equalizer 3

At 67-years-old, Denzel Washington is returning to The Equalizer series for the third instalment in the vigilante action franchise, for what will reportedly be called Equalizer 3.

The Equalizer franchise began in 2014 under the direction of long time Washington collaborator, Antoine Fuqua, with the film raking in box office figures upwards of $190 million dollars and general acclaim from critics for the stylistic violence.

The sequel, Equalizer 2, was released in 2018 with identical box office numbers and similar general acclaim, focusing on Fuqua’s direction and Washington’s performance as Robert McCall.

The third film was announced by Washington himself during the press tour for the critically acclaimed Oscar frontrunner, The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Washington told entertainment publication Collider that his next project would be Equalizer 3, with the script already complete.

“They have written the third Equalizer, so I’m scheduled to do that,” Washington teased.

“So I gotta get in shape and start beating people up again. I get to beat people up again. The Tragedy of Macbeth and then going and beating some people up. Can’t get any better, right?” said Washington.

Fuqua is slated to return to the director’s chair, which would mark the fifth collaborative effort between Washington and himself.

The film, which is based on the television series of the same name from the 1980s, premiered a female remake on CBS in 2021 and is currently in its second season, with Queen Latifah playing Robyn McCall.

Whether the two universes will collide at some point in the future is definitely uncertain, however, both Equalizer’s are obviously making an impact on the small screen and the big screen with audiences.
