Unvaccinated Could Play In Australian Open

Australian Open

There appears to be some conflict in regards to tennis players at the Australian Open and their vaccination status.

Despite statements from officials that players must be fully vaccinated before competing in Melbourne, a leaked email to WTA players appeared to contradict this.

Victoria recently introduced a mandate for all professional athletes requiring them to be fully vaccinated. However, the email suggests that unvaccinated players would be allowed to play if they quarantine for 14 days and produce a negative test result within 72 hours of departing for Australia.

Among the players who may be affected by this conflict are defending men’s singles champion Novak Djokovic, who has not yet revealed his vaccination status, US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev.

All four have given anti-vaccination mandate opinions recently.

At the time of writing, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has insisted that all players must be fully vaccinated, or they will be unable to compete.

Andrews insisted on Wednesday that his government will not apply for exemptions or allow unvaccinated players to play at a tournament where other workers and fans are all vaccinated.

There is no current word on how players have responded to this declaration from Andrews.
