This past weekend saw the 49th Annual American Music Awards take place at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The annual award show recognises the most popular artist, singles, and albums of the past year and since 2006, the winners have been picked by fans who can vote through the AMA website.
Pop rock sensation Olivia Rodrigo, who has taken the world by storm this past year with her debut studio album Sour, was the most nominated artist for the night with a grand total of seven nominations, with The Weeknd picking up six nominations, while Bad Bunny, Doja Cat and Giveon, were all tied up with five nominations apiece, respectively.
The big winners of the night were Doja Cat, Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo and BTS, who took out the four major awards in the general field. Doja Cat won Collaboration of the Year with Kiss Me More featuring SZA, Lil Nas X won Favourite Music Video for Montero (Call Me By Your Name), Olivia Rodrigo won New Artist of the Year, while BTS took the top honour of Artist of the Year, beating out Ariana Grande, Drake, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd.
There were three artists who were the most awarded for the night; BTS, Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion, with each artist taking home three awards.
Cardi B also made history twice in one night, joining Queen Latifah as the only other female rapper in AMA history to host the event. Cardi B also became the first artist to win Favourite Rap/Hip Hop Song three times since the award was introduced in 2016.
The 2021 AMAs also introduced the category of Favourite Artist – Gospel, which went to Kanye West for his 2021 album, Donda.
Taylor Swift continued her reign as the most awarded artist in AMA history with 34 awards, after taking home the award for Favourite Female Artist – Pop and Favourite Album – Pop, for her album Evermore.
