The Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers Found After 13 Years

The Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers

No one can forget these shoes!

The world famous ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz went missing 13 years ago and now they have finally been found.

The ruby slippers went missing back in 2005 from the late actress’ hometown of Grand Rapids in Minnesota. They were said to be insured for $US1 million ($AUD1.392 million).

The FBI have said that last year a man had approached the insurer and said to help them get back the slippers.

The local police (Grand Rapids) had asked the FBI for help after a year-long investigation. The slippers were recovered back in July.

So far no one has been arrested or charged over the theft, but the FBI have had “multiple suspects”. They are currently seeking help from the general public to help them find the ones responsible.

The slippers were on loan to the Garland museum from Hollywood memorabilia collector Michael Shaw when they were stolen.

There are another three pairs of the same red slippers worn by Judy Garland in the movie, which are currently held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Smithsonian and a private collector.

Author of The Ruby Slippers of Oz, Rhys Thomas called the famous slippers “the Holy Grail of Hollywood memorabilia”.

“They are maybe the most iconic cinematic prop or costume in movie history, and in fact, in cultural history,” Thomas said.

“They are a cultural icon.”

Thomas has said that this pair of ruby slippers could be worth between $US2 million ($AUD2.785 million) to $US7 million ($AUD9.748 million).
