Canadian singer The Weeknd is set to make his movie debut in Adam Sandler’s crime drama Uncut Gems.
The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, was spotted on the film’s set in New York on Monday.
Sources report that he performed during a scene with Sandler and rapper Trinidad James at popular nightclub 1 OAK.
“They’re filming there and took over for several days. They’re shooting a nightclub scene,” a source said.
It is not known how big the 28-year-old’s part is and if he will be playing himself or a character.
Uncut Gems will mark his first role in a feature film and the first time he has starred in a project onscreen besides his music videos.
The Weeknd already has an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for his track Earned It, from the film Fifty Shades of Grey.
Uncut Gems is being directed by Josh and Benny Safdie, who are best known for the movie Good Time and will star Idina Menzel, Lakeith Stanfield and Judd Hirsch.
The film follows Adam Sandler’s character, a jewellery store owner with a gambling addiction who is desperate to find a way to pay off his debts.
It began shooting two weeks ago.
