WARNING: Spoilers ahead!
I have read all of the Fifty Shades of Grey books and Fifty Shades Freed was my favourite so I was so excited for this film. I can see why it made $38.8 million in North America on its opening weekend.
In this instalment of the franchise, Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele get married and obviously have heaps of sex but on top of this, to make it more interesting, Anastasia’s old boss Jack Hyde comes back into the picture. If you have missed the other instalments, Hyde sexually assaulted Steele and was then fired by Grey. He has now made it his life’s mission to take down the Greys. So suspenseful!
Before we get to that though, I know many of you reading this may not like the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise and judge it very harshly. Well, I can understand that but don’t shoot down this movie or book quite yet.
Unlike the others, this instalment has the best plot. It is less about the sex and more about the storyline…and the intense kidnapping and bribery. Yes! There is of course sex still included because that’s what the Fifty Shades franchise is known for, right?
I am definitely a hopeless romantic so I loved this film. It was so lovey-dovey. I couldn’t keep the smile off my face. This is definitely a chick flick, but if you are a man and are being dragged along, there’s something for you too. Not only a naked woman, but also an epic car chase scene in an Audi.
Jamie Dornan (Christian Grey) & Dakota Johnson (Anastasia Steele) once again have amazing chemistry. They play the part of a married couple very well. They couldn’t keep their hands off each other and are obviously in the honeymoon phase.
My favourite scene was when Christian takes Ana to a gorgeous old house which he has bought for them to start their new life in. Their architect Gia Matteo (played by Arielle Kebbel) clearly has the hots for Mr Grey and is flirting with him right in front of his new wife. When he goes out of the room to answer a phone call, Ana sets her straight and tells her to “stop speaking to my husband as if I weren’t here,” and gets her to call her Mrs Grey instead of Ana. I love Gia’s face when she says this. I was thinking “You go girl! You set her straight.” Even Christian was impressed!
I’m sure you’re all wanting to know about the sex scenes now. I know that’s what you came for!
If you’re not into the Red Room of Pain ‘kinky’ stuff, the sexiest scene was definitely in the kitchen of their Aspen house while on holidays. Ana is having a tub of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in the middle of the night and when Christian comes out, she playfully puts a spoonful of the melting ice cream on his chest and licks it off. Christian then returns the favour by putting some ice cream on her inner thigh and licks it all the way up her leg.
At the end of the movie, the ‘twist’ is finally revealed. They really make you work for it. You have to see the whole movie to find it out.
Ana is also pregnant in this film and it really made me cringe when Jack Hyde attacks her and then kicks her in the stomach. The whole time I’m praying that she is going to be alright…which is funny since I’ve read all of the books and knew what was going to happen anyway.
The soundtrack for this film was INCREDIBLE! An absolute winner. Rita Ora and Liam Payne’s song For You was played several times but you never get sick of it, and throughout a scene in the Red Room of Pain, there was a fantastic cover of INXS’ Never Tear Us Apart. There was even a surprise at the end that I didn’t see coming. They played Ellie Goulding’s Love Me Like You Do. It was a beautiful song to play for the finale of the trilogy, as a whole montage of the last two films were played.
Unfortunately, after seeing the movie, I have realised they put all of the best parts of this film in the trailer though, which is very disappointing. However, it is one of those movies that I don’t see how they couldn’t have enticed you with the storyline without including the best parts.
Overall, this was a wonderful movie to watch. I watched it by myself but I can see that it would be a lot of fun to see with a girlfriend or two. I highly recommend it. It is a must-see! There will be moments where you’ll question a few things, like how can Jack Hyde have the skills to hack into Grey Enterprises after being a fiction editor at a publishing company, or why would you propose to your girlfriend in a noisy club, but you will definitely enjoy it for what it is. A feel-good movie!
