Pop icon Mariah Carey has revealed her private battle with bipolar disorder for the first time.
The 48-year-old said she was diagnosed with bipolar back in 2001, during her much publicised physical and mental breakdown.
“I didn’t want to believe it,” Carey said in an interview with People published this week.
In the next few years, she experienced ups-and-downs in both her career and personal life, including her split from ex-husband Nick Cannon.
The singer only recently sought treatment, after what she called “the hardest couple of years I’ve been through.”
Carey says she was living in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose her.
“It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love, writing songs and making music.”
She is now in therapy to help manage bipolar disorder II.
Carey, who shares six-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with ex Cannon, says she is now staying focused on finding the right balance of treatment that works for her.
