Aussie actress Margot Robbie is set to bring the iconic childhood wonder Barbie to theatres in 2020.

Robbie has been confirmed by brand Mattel and Warner Bros. Studios to play the blonde doll in a live-action feature film after the role was passed by Anne Hathaway and Amy Schumer.

In a statement from Robbie published by the toymaker brand Mattel, the I, Tonya actress is thrilled to bring the character to life and will look to focus on a positive message as she takes on the film as a co-producer as well.

“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity, and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery. Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president,” Robbie said.

“I’m so honoured to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide,” she said.

The new announcement adds to the Oscar-nominated star’s already busy filming schedule with two movies also in the pre-production phase. This includes superhero feature Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and war film Ruin.

The 28-year-old also has four motion pictures due to be released either this year or in 2020 including the star-studded film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Dreamland, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and an Untitled Roger Ailes Project.
