Adele scored a perfect 5 for 5 on Sunday night at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards with a clean sweep of the top categories of Album of the Year for 25, and both Record and Song of the Year for her hit Hello — a sweep that Adele accomplished five years ago with her last album, 21. She is the only artist to win Album, Record and Song of the Year twice!
She also won points for humility and grace after restarting a tribute to George Michael that she began off-key, and paying homage to Beyonce, the artist considered her key rival for the top awards.
Beyonce, who received the most nominations this year, won two of her nine categories; Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Music Video.
In accepting the Urban Contemporary Album award, Beyoncé said she wanted her children to “see themselves and have no doubt they are beautiful, intelligent and capable. This is something I want for every child of every race.”
Adele paid tribute to Beyoncé in her acceptance speech, declaring that she was the “artist of my life. All us artists, we adore you. I love you and I always have,” she said.
Adele and Metallica suffered vocal glitches during their performances earlier in the night.
Adele was performing an orchestral version of Fast Love as a tribute to George Michael and was struggling to find the right pitch. She dramatically stopped and asked to start again.
”I can’t mess this up for him,” she told the audience.
Her courage was rewarded with a standing ovation and lots of love from supportive fans on social media.
Metallica were not introduced by Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox for their performance featuring Lady Gaga, who’s vocals were the only ones heard as Frontman James Hetfield’s mic failed to work. They had to share the mic.
Dozens of winners were announced before the televised awards, including Australian dance guru Flume for Best Dance Album, Adele for Best Pop Vocal Album and Pop Solo Performance for Hello and Beyoncé for Best Music Video for Formation.
