A reboot of teen drama Gossip Girl is planned!

HBO Max, the new US-based streaming service from WarnerMedia, has ordered a direct-to-series reboot of the show, created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.

The service has given an order of 10 one-hour episodes from the original Gossip Girl team including executive producers Joshua Safran, Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz.

A new generation of students at a New York private school will be the centre of the series.

“It will address just how much social media and the landscape of New York itself has changed in the intervening years,” the service confirmed.

The original Gossip Girl series, based on the book by Cecily von Ziegesar, ran for six seasons from 2007-2012.

In the finale, it was revealed that Brooklyn outcast Dan Humphrey, who was played by Penn Badgley, was the infamous blogger at the centre of the show.

While the show was not critically acclaimed, it launched the careers of actors like Blake Lively, Leighton Meester and Penn Badgley.

The reboot comes at a time when networks are looking to beloved teen shows and franchises for opportunities.

There is no word yet if and when the series will be shown in Australia.
