the-flaming-lipsOklahoma-based band The Flaming Lips kicked off the Sydney Festival on Saturday night by performing a free show in the Domain.

The show was to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the month long festival that ends on January 26 and features music, theatre, art and more.

The psych-pop band lived up to their genre with their performance including confetti cannons, animal back-up dancers and frontman Coyne’s signature space-bubble crowd-surfing.

As part of the Summer Sounds portion of the festival, the gig also included an opening performance by electro-pop band FM Belfast, who originate from Reykjavík, Iceland.
