Downton Abbey Movie Gets Go Ahead

The Downton Abbey movie is officially happening with the original cast from the hit series returning.

Many cast members of the series have been eager to return for a big-screen “downton” and on Friday, the original principal cast including Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith and Hugh Bonneville announced that they are on board for the movie.

It will be produced by Carnival Films and distributed by Focus Features and Universal Pictures International. Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes has written the screenplay and will produce the feature, while Brian Percival will direct it.

Downton Abbey aired on ITV in the UK and was a masterpiece show in the US. It ran for six seasons and became a global hit.

The show followed the lives of the Crawley family and their servants at the turn of the 20th century in an Edwardian English country home.

Details about the plot of the film have not yet been revealed.

“Since the series ended, fans of ‘Downton’ have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter,” said Focus Chairman Peter Kujawski.

“We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of ‘Downton’ to the big screen.”
