Doris Day Dies At 97

Doris Day

Hollywood legend Doris Day has unfortunately died at the age of 97.

The singer turned actress was best known for her films Calamity Jane and Pillow Talk.

The Doris Day Animal Foundation announced the sad news, saying that she died on Monday at her home in Carmel Valley, California.

The statement said she had been “in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia”.

“She was surrounded by a few close friends as she passed,” the statement continued.

According to the organisation, “Doris’ wishes were that she have no funeral or memorial service and no grave marker”.

Born Doris Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff in April 1922, Day originally wanted to be a dancer but had to abandon her dream after breaking her right leg in a car accident. At the age of 15, she began her singing career.

In the 1970s, she focused her time and energy on her animal foundation.

Her life was unfortunately not always sunny. She married four times, was divorced three times and widowed once.

She had only one son, Terry Melcher, a record producer who died of melanoma in 2004 at the age of 62.
