Two-time Golden Globe winner Burt Reynolds has unfortunately died at the age of 82.
Reynolds was known as a charismatic star in films such as Deliverance, The Longest Yard and Smokey and the Bandit.
On Thursday, his manager Erik Kritzer confirmed that the actor had died that morning at Jupiter Medical Center in Florida. Reynolds had undergone a quintuple heart bypass back in February 2010.
The cause of his death was cardiopulmonary arrest, also known as cardiac arrest.
The actor was recently filming Quentin Tarantino’s movie Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, which is about American criminal Charles Manson’s murders.
Reynolds had turned down the iconic roles of James Bond and Han Solo.
The 82-year-old was one of Hollywood’s top-grossing stars from the year 1978 through to 1982. In 1978, the actor had four movies playing in theatres at the exact same time.
The news of his passing shocked Hollywood, and many celebrities took to social media offering remembrances and condolences to the legendary actor.
“He was my childhood,” said Oscar winner Viola Davis.
The director Kevin Smith called Reynolds “a true American icon” and praised him for showing “the fun of movie-making”.
Arnold Schwarzenegger called Reynolds one of his heroes, “He was a trailblazer. He showed the way to transition from being an athlete to being the highest paid actor, and he always inspired me.”
Sylvester Stallone added “he had a great sense of humor and I enjoyed his company so much … RIP”.
The Shield actor Michael Chiklis, who worked alongside Reynolds on BL Stryker, said “I owe my career, at least in part, to the great Burt Reynolds. Heartbroken to learn of his passing. He was one of a kind. A fun loving, charismatic talent who did many good deeds quietly, without personal expectation but rather out of the kindness of his extraordinary heart. RIP.”
