Britney Spears is taking an “indefinite hiatus” from her Las Vegas residency to take care of her father.
Spears made the announcement with a press release and on social media, explaining that she was taking a break from work to care for her 66-year-old father, Jamie Spears, after he almost died.
“Two months ago, Mr Jamie Spears became seriously ill and was rushed to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. His colon spontaneously ruptured and he was immediately admitted into surgery,” the press release said.
Mr Spears spent a month in hospital and is now recovering at home. He is expected to make a full recovery.
The much-anticipated Britney: Domination residency was scheduled to launch in February at Las Vegas’ Park Theatre and run through to August.
“I don’t even know where to start with this, because this is so tough for me to say. I will not be performing my new show Domination. I’ve been looking forward to this show and seeing all of you this year, so doing this breaks my heart,” Spears said on Instagram.
“However, it’s important to always put your family first… and that’s the decision I had to make. A couple of months ago, my father was hospitalized and almost died. We’re all so grateful that he came out of it alive, but he still has a long road ahead of him. I had to make the difficult decision to put my full focus and energy on my family at this time. I hope you all can understand,” she continued.
The show is now being placed on hold “until further notice.”
