ARIA Awards 2015

Arias 2015

Arias 2015There were many highlights from last night’s ARIA awards, and the ability for all the big Australian stars to take on the red carpet on one of the hottest days of the year is among them.

Perth band Tame Impala and Melbourne’s Courtney Barnett received the largest number of awards between them. Tame Impala scored five awards in total for their new album Currents while Barnett, who had the most nominations of the night, took home the ‘Best Female Artist’ award, as well as ‘Breakthrough Artist’ and ‘Independent Release’.

Kevin Parker, singer for Tame Impala, was even convinced that Barnett would receive the ‘Best Rock Album’ award before the band was announced. When they were called on again for ‘Album of the Year’, Parker stated “You’re sick of seeing us.”

In her acceptance speech, Barnett gave a shout out to London and even thanked her cat, Bubbles. The 28-year-old received a lot of commendation for her album Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit earlier in March, which was number four on the ARIA charts.

Other notable wins included Vance Joy for ‘Best Male Artist’, who opened the ceremony with his performance of Fire and the Flood, and Jarryd James who took home the pop category award for Do You Remember, which was also performed on stage during the show.

One of the most historical moments was Tina Arena’s performance with The Veronicas and Jessica Mauboy, the only all-female performance on a male dominated night of performances.

Arena was then admitted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and used her speech to dish out ageism and sexism in the industry and urging Australian radio to play more Australian music.

Arena’s speech was supported by Matt Okine, who made note of the lack of Australian women on commercial radio.

While Taylor Swift was a no show, Ed Sheeran did drop by to pick up the inaugural Diamond award for album sales, and Conrad Sewell took home the ‘Song of the Year’ award for his song ‘Start Again’.
